Hey, Hoynsie: What is Cleveland’s strategy relative to acquiring a right-handed power hitter? The last time they had a big bat was Edwin Encarnacion and they actually signed him to a multiyear deal. — Roger Luca, Tallahassee, Florida.
Hey, Roger: I don’t see them signing a power-hitter in the same class as Encarnacion. I do think they’ll bring in a hitter on a short-term contract before opening day. I think they’ll add another hitter or two on minor league deals for spring training. How could they not after last year’s dismal performance by the offense?
Hey, Hoynsie: The Guardians are about $24 million short of last year’s $100 million opening-day payroll. Do you think they can make that up in signings coming before opening day on March 26? ― Tim Johnson, Rockville, Indiana.
Hey, Tim: It’s possible. In the 2024-2025 offseason, they signed Shane Bieber, Carlos Santana, Jakob Junis, Paul Sewald and Kolby Allard. I’m not sure if this year’s payroll will reach last year’s level, but there’s definitely room to add a second or third-tier hitter.
Hey, Hoynsie: Which feat is more impressive ... the Indians’ 22-game winning streak under Terry Francona in 2017? Or the Guardians’ rally from a 15 1/2-game deficit in July to win the AL Central on the last day of the season? — Andy Mees, Sandusky.
Hey, Andy: I’d have to say the rally by the 2025 Guardians to win the Central because no team had ever overcome that large a deficit to win a division title.
The 22-game winning streak was a thing of beauty as well. It remains the longest winning streak in AL history.
Hey, Hoynsie: I’m surprised at the contract Kansas City gave Lane Thomas. Was it a smart move by Cleveland’s front office to not take a chance on Thomas staying healthy at that price? — John Kyle, Westfield Center, Ohio.
Hey, John: The Guardians talked to Thomas about returning for 2026 even though he played just 39 games last season and made three trips to the injured list. Thomas wanted a chance to play every day, and the Guardians like to platoon at all but a few positions.
Hey, Hoynsie: I listened to the “The Cleveland Baseball Talk” podcast about the Guardians finding a “Robin” to go pair with Jose Ramirez’s ”Batman." Is there someone on the current 40-man roster or in the pipeline who could fill that role? — Bill, Tennessee.
Hey, Bill: In his first full season in the big leagues last year, Kyle Manzardo, often hitting behind Ramirez, hit 27 homers and drove in 70 runs. Among Cleveland’s hitters, he ranked second to Ramirez in each category.
I still consider Chase DeLauter to be in the pipeline even though he’s on the 40-man roster for the first time. Somewhere in the near future, if he can stay healthy, he could fill the role as well.
Hey, Hoynsie: How many teams make the postseason in the four major sports in North America? — Jim Horvath, Dublin.
Hey, Jim: Here’s the breakdown: 12 of 30 MLB teams, 14 of 32 NFL teams, 16 of 30 NHL teams and 20 of 30 NBA teams make the postseason.
Hey, Hoynsie: How many Guardians middle infielders and relievers does it take to produce a double-digit home-run hitting outfielder? — Mark Desimone, Bakersfield, California.
Hey, Mark: As you know, there’s room for only one wise guy around here and that’s me.
Hey, Hoynsie: Why don’t the Guardians sign Harrison Bader. He bats right-handed and could answer their need for a center fielder. You know they’re going to trade Steven Kwan, so that would open left and right field for Chase DeLauter and George Valera. — Joe McCorkle.
Hey, Joe: It sounds like Bader wants a multiyear deal and the Guardians might be reluctant to do that with a possible work stoppage brewing when the basic agreement ends after the 2026 season. Why not keep Kwan until he’s eligible for free agency after the 2027 season, sign Bader and see how healthy DeLauter and Valera can stay?
Hey, Hoynsie: The Guardians’ front office has done nothing to improve the anemic offense from last year, which is inexcusable. Does anyone in the organization know who is going to play center field this year? — Jack Chase.
Hey, Jack: I understand your frustration, but moves can still be made to improve one of the worst offenses in franchise history before the season opens on March 26.
As for who is going to play center field, it could be DeLauter. Then again, it could be Angel Martinez, Petey Halpin, Daniel Schneemann, Nolan Jones, Stuart Fairchild and so on and so on.
That should clear things up.
