No Sea, Class A Lake County is the next step up for guys who played in short season rookie ball year before.

This years Lake County team is littered with guys who played for the Scrappers last year. Freeman, Fermin, Draper, McCarthy, etc. it’s their next step up after short season rookie league.

Then next step up is, of course, Class-A Advanced, as they call it. Which for us is Lynchburg Hillcats.

Aiken pitched in two games in relief. He retired 2 batters, walked 6, allowed 1 hit.
Demotion to Mahoning Valley just means he's sent away. Since the Scrappers don't play until June
Full season ball is higher level than short season, although as you note the latter may have older players since college kids generally debut here after the draft.

Highlights and lowlights from Wednesday:

C;lippers were shutout 8-0. If anyone's hoping to add to the major league offense with guys from Columbus, I'm afraid that only 3 in yesterday's lineup were hitting above 200 and the top mark is 250,. CarGo was not included, he's their only offense.
Their weakest starter Chiang was banged around. So was promising reliever Henry Martinez who's AAA stats over 2 seasons are abysmal.

Akron won its first after 6 losses. Veteran Paulson with the win. Promising reliever Dalbert Siri with the save, he's pitched 3 1/3 scoreless with 5K and 1 walk. Longo with 3 hits all singles is at 333.

Bats booming for Lynchburg in 10-3 win. Kwan's first 1-hit day, also drew his first walk and stole his 3rd base. Oscar Gonzalez with a big night, 4 hits, including his 3rd double; he's hitting 438 with a 1032 OPS. He's another hitter who doesn't walk. Nolan Jones does walk, once yesterday, but was hitless, dropping to 227. Gavin Collins, usually the catcher had a day off at 1st base, he homered, singled, walked twice, hitting 400, OPS 1128.
Lefty Adam Scott with 5 innings for the win. But the pitching star was Nick Gallagher who finished up with 4 perfect innings, 6 K

Another scoreless 5 inning outing by Luis Oviedo with Lake County, 3 walks, 2 K, 4 hits. 7-0 win. Tyler Freeman who set a doubles record in the NYPL last summer with his 2nd along with a single and a walk. Jose Fermin 2nd baseman with a homer [his first puts him one off his career season high] and a couple of walks, his forte. Marcos Gonzalez, playing 3rd base on this team of SSs, singled, walked twice and stole 2 bases. Holmes 0-4. Benson the night off.

I wouldn't say Gavin Collins is "usually" the catcher, Civ. He was a catcher when we drafted him, but he never played a game there his first year in our system. They moved him to 3rd base.

No games at catcher in 2016. In 2017 only 1 game at catcher, 71 at 3B.

I do not think he hit like they (Or I) thought he would, so last year they began playing him a little more at catcher, where his disappointing bat would play better. 31 games at catcher, 29 games at 3B.

So far this year it looks like they are planning on doing something similar, but splitting his time between 1st base, 3 games so far, and catcher, 2 games so far. But we will see.

He was a guy I was happy we drafted. I thought he would hit better than he has. So it is nice to see him get off to a good start this year. Hitting 400 so far with 2 doubles and a homer. I hope he turns into the under the radar bat I thought he would. But at this point I'm not holding my breath. But I would like him more if they left him at catcher. Since we recently cut loose Lucas we could find him a spot.

JC Mejia and Burgos both pitching today both had stellar shutouts their first starters [as did Oviedo and Eli Morgan and Garza] [Garza was clobbered in his second start while Oviedo with another 5 inning shutout] Mejia and Burgos are both big solid guys and project well for future.
Since we are solid in starting pitching at the majors, thin in AAA and AA, these guys either are
A] trade bait for someone who can hit or
B] next generation of starters after Bauers and Kluber are dealt or leave as free agents.

in either case they are very valuable parts of the future

It's early in all the games this evening but so far the minor league pitchers are aping Bieber and friends and haven't allowed a run. The pitchers today

Juan Carlos Mejia who threw 5 no hit innings in his first start has done the same in two innings today.
Raymond Burgos also duplicating his initial 5 inning shutout; he's finished 4 with no runs no walks 4 hits and 4 k on his line
Sean Brady subbing for Rodriguez in Columbus has 2 2/3 shutout innings at the moment, CarGo 2 run homer and Kipnis a double as the soon to be promoted pair lead the offense.
And someone I never heard of named Matt Solter worked 4 shutout inning subbing for Brady and another veteran pickup Breenan Bernardino worked a scoreless 5th.

Besides Columbus' 3 runs, Lake County is only team to score, 2 tallied both by Fermin who has singled and doubled getting at SS today with Freeman off

Re: Minor Matters

Burgos and Mejia finished with 1-run outings:

Burgos 5 1/3 6 1 1 1 4 0.87
Mejia 6 4 1 1 1 7 0.82
Oviedo unchallenged with 2 shutout starts; Eli Morgan will get a chance to match that

Collins 3 hits for Hillcats, hitting 440.

Karinchak keeps racking up the K's: this time a perfect inning with 3 strikeouts. He's now fanned the maximum of 9 in 3 innings pitched.
Kaminsky with the loss in relief but errors did him in

Columbus with an offensive explosion for 12=4 win. Mercado and Chang had not been hitting much but both came up with big games:
Mercado 3 hits, one a double, now at 241/647 OPS. Chang 3 hits, one a homer 222/693.
Bobby Bradley his 2nd homer and a single; 269/964
Barnes 4 hits including a homer.
Not much for Eric Haase 1-5 4K. He's stuck at 160/502

CLE HiA Mejia, Jean Carlos 6.0 4 1 1 2 7 0.82 W (1-0) He spent 4 years in short season ball before "busting out" last summer. He's 22 so I'd guess he gets promoted aggressively from now until he shows a level of failure
