Ronny Rodriguez hits walkoff homer to keep his team alive

DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE

Ronny Rodriguez (1B, Aguilas Cibaenas): 2-for-4, 3 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI, BB, K. This may go down as Ronny Rodriguez's best game of his career and the most memorable game he has ever played in. Moved to the leadoff spot in a crucial win-or-go-home game, he responded in a massive way scoring all three runs for Aguilas Cibaenas in their 3-2 win in 10 innings. Wait, it gets better for Ronny Rod. Down 1-0 coming up to bat in the bottom of the first, Rodriguez led off the inning with a solo blast to left center to tie the game at 1-1. Then, with one out in the 6th inning and down 2-1, Rodriguez coaxed a walk with one out and scored on a two out single to tie the score at 2-2 after six innings. Finally, in the bottom of the 10th inning, tied at 2-2 and with their postseason fate on the line, Rodriguez jacked a one out line drive to left field for a walkoff homer that sent the home crowd and his teammates into a frenzy. Rodriguez and his teammates are still down four games to three in the best-of-nine series as Game 8 is set for Friday night. What a game, what a series, what a winter showing from Rodriguez this offseason.....and to think that just yesterday I was wondering if he was tiring. I still think he is a dark horse to fill a utility need for the Indians at some point in 2017, and this kind of play over the last three months should do nothing but enhance his chances.

The Eagles force a 9th and decisive game in Santiago; beat the Tigers 7-3

SANTO DOMINGO.-

With the knife in their mouth, with no margin of error and a slip to fall off the cliff, the Eagles have played their best baseball. the last two evenings as they struck hard in the first inning and left Licey with the unforseen: a ninth game to define the champion.

Mexican left-hander Irwin Delgado froze the blue bats for six innings with just two harmless hits and Orlando Calixte produced three runs with a double and single to lead the Aguilas to a 7-3 win that ties at 4 the final series that the cats had the advantage 4-2 on Thursday.

The game that will define the champion will start at 8:00 PM this Saturday in Cibao Park.

Mexican blue starter Arturo Lopez was punished mercilessly with six hits and four runs in just one inning and a third to take the defeat.

The Eagles got the scoring off to a fast start in the first innings scoring four times. With one out, Juan Perez, Zoilo Almonte, and Chesny Young had three consecutive base hits to load the bases. Alfredo Marte grounded into a force out. Juan Perez out at home and the bases remaind full of Eagles. Orlando Calixte line a three run double (2) to left field. Zoilo Almonte, Chesny Young, and Alfredo Marte scored. Orlando Calixte advanced to 3rd on the throw. Angel Franco singled on a soft line drive to center field. Orlando Calixte scored.

The Eagles extended their lead to 7-0 scoring an additional three runs. Orlando Calixte kead the inning off with a base hit. Angel Franco lined out but Johan Camargo and Francisco Pena singled. Orlando Calixte scored on Pena's base hit. With two out, Juan Perez's triple drove in Johan Camargo and Francisco Pena.

Licey picked up a pair of runs in the seventh when Yamaico Navarro waked and Mel Rojas homered off Delgado.

The Tigers tried to mount another rally in the eighth. Donovan Solano drove in Sergio Alcántara from second, Navarro was walked by Edgar Garcia, but Fernando Abad came on in relief and retired Juan Francisco on a fly ball to right and struck out Rojas.

Reliever Josh Judy extended his perfection by working the ninth walking one batter.

Ronny Rodriguez now the lone Indian playing winter ball

With Joe Colon not on the Criollos de Caguas' Caribbean Series roster and Yonathan Mendoza unlikely to be picked up by the Aguilas del Zulia as a refuerzo, Ronny Rodriguez is the last current Indian remaining in winter ball.

DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LIDOM)

Ronny Rodriguez (Aguilas Cibaenas, 1B) - 2-5, 1 3B, 1 K - Ronny-Rod made it back-to-back multi-hit games following a three game hitless streak as the Aguilas won their second straight game to force a decisive ninth game in the Serie Final after being driven to the brink of elimination by losing the three games in which Rodriguez failed to get a hit. As Ronny-Rod goes, so go the Aguilas.

JOSH JUDY

Josh Judy (Aguilas Cibaenas, RP) - 1 IP, 1 BB - Judy closed out the Aguilas' Game 8 victory with this solid ninth inning effort. Judy remains unscored upon this winter in 34.2 IP in 34 games.

[ In my opinion, if the Indians are going to give out invites to spring training so freely, Josh Judy would be at the top of my list for one of those invites! ]

Emilio Bonifacio's three double capped a five-run attack in the sixth inning, sending the Licey Tigers on their way to a 6-2 win over the Cibao Eagles on Saturday to win the Republican Winter Baseball Dominican Republic.

The Tigers prevailed 5-4 in the final series to the best of nine games.

It was the first Licey title since being crowned in 2014. They also increased their lead as the highest winners in the history of the circuit, with 22 championships, surpassing the 20 that the Eagles display.

Bonifacio hit 2-4 with a double and three rbi, Sergio Alcántara hit 4-5 with a triple and two rbi and Donovan Solano added two hits and one run to highlight the offense of the winners.

Opener César Valdez (4-0) pitched five scoreless innings with just two hits and two fanned to win the game. Ulises Joaquín (0-1) took the loss after allowing a run in two innings and two thirds in his relief work.

The Tigers will represent the Dominican League in the Caribbean Series that will start next Wednesday in Culiacan, Mexico. In their history they have conquered 10 titles of this contest, the last one in 2008 when it was held in the Dominican Republic.

Betancourt, Mexicali win, 13-1, to clinch pennant, CS berth

The Mexicali Aguilas overcame an early 1-0 deficit by scoring two runs in the top of the third inning and went on to pull away from the Los Mochis Caneros, 13-1, in Game Six of the Mexican Pacific League championship series Saturday to clinch the LMP pennant and a berth in the Caribbean Series. Former big leaguer Yuniesky Betancourt (pictured) drove in six runs as Mexicali starter Hector Velazquez benefitted from all the support for the win, although the LMP Pitcher of the Year certainly helped himself with six innings of sterling mound work.

Mexicali 13-16-0, LOS MOCHIS 1-7-0

The Caneros scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second when Eugenio Velez walked, stole second and came home when Sebastian Valle singled to right off Velazquez. Mexicali came right back with a pair of runs in the third frame, starting with Yordanys Linares' first-pitch leadoff homer off Mochis starter Manny Barreda over the right field wall to tie the game. One out later, Ramon Ruiz walked, moved to second on Chris Roberson's bunt single, took third on Valle's passed ball as Barreda was pitching to Jason Bourgeois and, after Bourgeois drew a walk to load the bases, hit paydirt on Betancourt's sacrifice fly to center field to put the visitors ahead.

With Velazquez working effectively against the Caneros lineup, Mexicali widened the gap by scoring in six consecutive innings. The Eagles put a third run on the board in the fourth when Agustin Murillo scored from third on Rios' groundout to second, but it was the top of the fifth that took whatever wind remained out of Los Mochis' sails with three more runs to chase Barreda and open up a 6-1 advantage.

After Bourgeois led off with a groundout to third, Betancourt poked a single up the middle. C.J. Retherford lined out to Caneros shortstop Yosmany Guerra for the second out and it looked like Mochis and Barreda would get out of the inning unscathed. However, Luis Juarez singled to center and Murillo walked to fill the sacks, bringing manager Luis Sojo out of the Caneros dugout with his hook, waving in Jesus Verduzco from the bullpen to face Linares. During that encounter, Verduzco uncorked a wild pitch that scored Betancourt from third, then gave up a single to Linares that brought in both Juarez and Murillo, the latter beating Leandro Castro's throw to the plate from center field. That would be all for Verduzco and, for all intent and purposes, Los Mochis' chances to even the series and force a Game Seven on Sunday.

With Jon Sintes now pitching for the host team, Rios and Roberson led off the top of the sixth with back-to-back singles through the box. Bourgeois grounded to first baseman Saul Soto, who threw to Guerra covering second to force Roberson as Rios scooted to third while Bourgeois beat Guerra's double-play relay to first, putting runners at the corners with one out. Betancourt then lofted a sacrifice fly to right that brought in Rios with Mexicali's seventh run of the night, followed by a Retherford single to left that advanced Bourgeois to second. Sojo emerged from the Mochis dugout once more, this time signalling for Guillermo Trujillo to pitch to Juarez. Once more the ex-MLBer's strategy backfired, as Juarez redirected Trujillo's first pitch through the gap into left field to score the speedy Bourgeois, making it an 8-1 Aguilas lead.

If any doubt about the game's eventual outcome still remained, it was shattered by yet another Mexicali rally in the seventh that netted the visitors four more scores to bring the count to 12-1. Linares opened the inning with a walk before being replaced by pinch-runner Missael German. Xorge Carrillo singled German over to third, followed by a Rios pop fly out to second. Sojo trudged from the Los Mochis dugout to bring in one more reliever, this time handing the ball to former Dodgers minor leaguer Thomas Melgarejo, and one more time the move failed as Melgarejo's first pitch plunked Roberson to load the bases. Exit Melgarejo, enter Lenix Osuna, who retired Bourgeois on a pop-up to Soto in foul territory before serving up a grand slam homer to Betancourt. Mexicali added one more tally in the eighth when Murillo led off with a single, went to third on a German double and scored on a Carrillo sacrifice fly. There was no more scoring in the game after that but it was hardly necessary as many of the 11,386 fans in a jampacked Estadio Emilio Ibarra Almada had already headed for their homes in Los Mochis by then.

Velazquez was sharp in his six innings on the hill for Mexicali, earning the win to go to 3-1 in the postseason by allowing one run on four hits and two walks, striking out four. Barreda was tagged with the defeat for Los Mochis after being roughed up for six runs on as six hits and four walks in 4.2 frames. If misery loves company, Barreda had a full house as Sojo ended up bringing in seven relievers from the fifth inning on. Seven Mochis batters had one hit apiece (with J.C. Linares' double the lone extra-base hit). Roberson and Linares each had three hits in the game, with the latter driving in three, but the night belonged to Betancourt, who went 2-for-4 with six ribbies. The former nine-year MLB shortstop starred as a reinforcement for Mazatlan in last winter's Caribbean Series win but did not play last summer. The rest appears to have agreed with him, with Betancourt finishing the MexPac playoffs with a .349 batting average.

With their first pennant since 1998-99 (with current Mexicali skipper Roberto Vizcarra's father-in-law Francisco "Paquin" Estrada at the helm), the Aguilas will head 125 miles down the road from Los Mochis to Culiacan for the Caribbean Series, where they'll play their first game Wednesday night against Puerto Rico's Caguas Criollos. The Aguilas won the Serie del Caribe in 1986 under manager Ben "Cananea" Reyes.

Disgusted by defeat set fire to trees in park

Aguilas Cibaenas fans set fire to the trees last night in San Juan de la Maguana park, after their team lost the championship to the Tigres del Licey.

The action occurred in the park Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, in front of the Palace of Justice where a giant screen was set up so that the fans could see the final game of the series, scheduled for the best of nine the reason why the game of last night was decisive.

The pines did not burn completely because some community members began to put out the fire by pouring water with buckets, until the firefighters arrived, who finished the work.

The Licey Tigers were crowned champions of the Series of the Baseball Tournament last night 6-2 in the Cibao Stadium, in Santiago de los Caballeros.

[ The largest sports rivalry in the Dominican Republic. They love their baseball. They hate to lose. Lot of pressure on these players to perform. A few bad apples spoiling the bunch ]

Licey Reinforcements for Caribbean Series

The management of the Licey Tigers is assured of almost all the reinforcements that will accompany the group in the Caribbean Series that will be played from February 1 to 7 in Culiacan, Mexico.

Yesterday, general manager Junior Noboa announced several reinforcements, including Zoilo Almonte, Ronny Rodríguez, Ulises Joaquín and Juan Grullón, from the Aguilas Cibaenas his rival in the final series that ended on Saturday.

Also, Noboa confirmed the participation of the versatile player Leury García and pitcher Ramon Ramirez, both of the Cibao Giants. To that list are added reliever Edgar Garcia of Estrellas and Bryan Evans, who pitched with the Toros del Este at the beginning of the season and then reinforced the Leones dll Escogido in the semifinal.

Noboa revealed that Licey management extended the invitation to the imported Michael Dimock and Austin Fleet, who pitched with Licey as reinforcements, and who wait for the response of both.

[ Curiously missing is Josh Judy! That's a shocker unless Josh decided he need time off to prepare for an invite to spring training ?!?! ]

[ The last Indian representative to play in the Series del Caribe was Jose Ramirez, reinforcement, who had a very nice showing as chronicled somewhere in this folder. ]

A gala week for Latino baseball in the Caribbean Series. magnificent scenery, the Ballpark BBVA Bancomer home of the Tomateros of Culiacan, a colorful city in the Mexican Pacific, Mexico will be putting on the long tablecloths for the event.

This time the Caribbean Series in its edition LIX has two extremes of excellence that drive the motivation of all. The first, no doubt, is the return of the Licey Tigers from the Dominican, that after defeating the Eagles of Cibao , their historical rival, are back with their wonderful history of being the team , with nine titles in the tournament.

A newcomer from Cuba, but no less attractive to the series, are the Alazanes of Granma representatives from the great island of Cuba. With no record in the event, the Cubans have always given maximum commitment.

The Cubans have an added interest in competing as they will be closely watched by scouts from the major league always ready to sign them for millions.

The Alazanes of Granma want to renew Cuban baseball credentials in the series. Two years ago, after a lengthy absence, surprised when the Vegueros of Pinar del Rio won the Caribbean Series.

Not to be outdone, the Caguas Criollos bring with them the responsibility of maintaining the high prestige of Boricua ball in the series. which, in the past days have been paying homage to their new Hall Of Famer, Ivan 'Pudge' Rodriguez. Puerto Rico has boasted some famous names from past postseasons of baseball.

It is true that this Puerto Rican team has lost some players who preferred to be in World Baseball Classic, but have taken great care and are committed to men like Carlos Delgado, Juan "Igor" Gonzalez and Carlos Baerga and managed by Alex Cora.

Venezuelan ball with all it's prestige, reached the Mexican land with an historic team like the Eagles of Zulia, who had to overcome 17 long years without being crowned champions of the land, defeated the mighty Cardinals of Lara to win the Venezuelan title and come to this series as two time winners of the Caribbean Series in 1984 and 1989.
