The Tigers beat 4-1 the Giants and increase their lead for 2nd place

SANTO DOMINGO.-

Licey performed their duties against one of their two direct rivals to move away to a full game for second place in the round robin tournament.

Jason Rogers, hitting .111 with runners in scoring position, singled that brought two runs home to break a tie in the third and capped the comeback against the Giants 4-1 Thursday night at the Quisqueya. The result ended a two-game losing streak of the Tigers (6-7) and allows them to increase their lead over Escogido (5-8) for second place, while the Giants (4-8) fell into the basement.

Cesar Valdez (1-0) worked 5.2 innings of five hits, one run, one walk and six strikeouts to score the win. Cory Riordan (1-1) lost and Jairo Asencio (5) got the save. In the third with two outs, Ketel Marte doubled to right and scored on Leury García's single.

But Licey turned the tables in the bottom of the third when they ended a streak of 21 innings without scoring a run. Donovan Solano singled, Sergio Alcantara was out on a sacrifice bunt Solano to 2nd. Emilio Bonifacio singled on a grag bunt. Donovan Solano to 3rd. Anderson Hernandez singled. Donovan Solano scored. Zulia off on the right foot began with a victory 3-2 in the semifinal series against the Caribes de Anzoátegui

CARACAS

In a close game where the pitching dominated from start to finish, the Aguilas del Zulia took the best part by winning 3-2 Caribes de Anzoategui, in the first game of the semifinal series between the two.

The postseason reinforcements completed their work. Endy Chávez scored the first run of the game when he scored on a wild pitch in the first inning. In the same inning, a home run by René Reyes tied the game. An error by the second base allowed two more runs to score for Zulia that changed the scoreboard 3-1 in the fourth inning. Jose Pirela and Alex Romero led off the inning with walks. After a pitching change, Jesus Flores walked to load the bases with no outs. Ronny Cedeno grounds into a force out. Jose Pirela and Alex Romero scored.

The Caribes narrowed the lead to one run in the sixth inning. With two outs, Luis Jimenez walked. Mario Lisson doubled (1) to left fielder Jose Pirela. Luis Jimenez scored.

Carlos Hernández won the game and Silvino Bracho saved.

The righty Emerson Martinez was charged with the defeat for the Caribes.

La Guaira imposed the loss on the Cardinals 7-6 in Barquisimeto

The Tiburones de La Guaira defeated Lara Cardinals in the Antonio Herrera Gutierrez stadium in Barquisimeto by a score of 7-6, even though they blew a five run lead to take game one of the semi final series.

La Guaira opened impressively with a cluster of five runs in the first inning on the heals of a three run homer by Alcides Escobar (2-5), the first of the night for the shortstop.

Lara to a deep breath and gradually started their comeback with a run scored in the third inning. In the fifth inning, they produced three runs, two on a base hit by Jesus Montero and one by Paulo Orlando.

Paolo Orlando had the pleasure of turning the table with a two run double giving Lara in the one run lead 6-5 in the seventh inning.

But the hard work by Lara was annihilated by Alcides Escobar's second homer of the game pulling La Guaira into a 6-6 tie in the eighth inning.

However, the hunger for the Sharks was satisfied in the top of the ninth inning. A double by Heiker Meneses drove home Alonzo Harris that added up to the Sharks first victory in the semifinal.

The Mexicali Aguilas chased Hermosillo starter Travis Blackley to the showers with an eight-run outburst in the bottom of the third inning en route to a 16-6 manhandling of the Naranjeros at Estadio B'Air Thursday night in their Mexican Pacific League semifinal series. In the other MexPac Final Four matchup in Los Mochis, a three-run homer from Saul Soto (pictured) was the centerpiece of the Caneros' seven-run seventh in their 14-2 blowout of Culiacan in Estadio Emilio Ibarra Almada.

Both the Aguilas and Caneros now lead their series, 2 games to 0, heading into Friday's Game Three contests in Hermosillo and Culiacan, respectively.
Image
LOS MOCHIS 14-17-1, Culiacan 2-10-2

Soto's homer was one of four Los Mochis longballs served up by three different Tomateros pitchers in the fateful seventh as the Caneros broke open what had been a coompetitive game. Mochis scored the first run of the game on a wild play that started when Phillies farmhand Leandro Castro bunted down the third base line, drawing a hurried throw from Culiacan's Issmael Salas that sailed into right field foul territory, allowing Castro to streak all the way to second. He kept on going after rightfielder Sebastian Elizalde made a poor relay throw back toward the infield and was able to scamper around to score on a play even Ty Cobb would've smiled at in approval.

The Caneros scored twice more in the third to go ahead, 3-0. Tomateros starter Zack Dodson intentionally walked Isaac Rodriguez to load the bases so he could face MLB vet Lew Ford, who sliced a grounder into left field to score Sebastian Valle from third. Culiacan ended Mochis' shutout bid in the top of the seventh, when reliever Fabian Williamson gave up a Salas homer to left, bringing the visitors to within two runs. Then came the bottom of the seventh, when Juan Carlos Gamboa (solo), Eugenio Velez (solo), Soto (three-run) and Yosmany Guerra (solo) all homered as the Caneros bashed their way to a 10-1 advantage and the rout was on. Culiacan did score a run in the eighth when Joey Meneses doubled and came in on Ramiro Pena's single, but Los Mochis put another four on the board to put the Tomateros away. J.C. Linares stroked a bases-loaded triple to deliver the coup de grace.

The Caneros' 17-hit attack in front of another SRO home crowd of 11,372 should not obsure the standout work of Mochis starter Luis Niebla, who went to 2-0 in the postseason by tossing six innings of shutout ball, scattering five hits and a pair of walks. Dodson took the loss for Culiacan to fall to 0-2 in the playoffs. The former Pirates prospect didn't pitch badly (two earned runs in five entradas of work) and was spared from what came next. The Caneros outscored Culiacan, 19-2, over two games in Los Mochiss.
Image
MEXICALI 16-21-0, Hermosillo 6-13-0

Mexicali sent eleven men to the plate in the third inning and put eight runs on the board to take a 9-0 lead and kept the hits coming the rest of the game as the Aguilas bombed Hermosillo, 16-6.

Naranjeros starter Travis Blackley was touched for a C.J. Retherford homer run in the bottom of the second as Mexicali took a 1-0 lead, then chased in the third after allowing three runs on four hits in the third, including a two-out, two-run single from Xorge Carrrillo off the last pitch the ex-MLBer threw for the night. Reliever Hector Galvan fared no better, eventually giving up a three-run double to Ramon Rios, who then came in on a Chris Roberson double for the final run of the inning. The toll? Eight Mexicali runs on six hits, one walk, one hit bastman and two wild pitches. From that point on, it was only a matter of time.

Mexicali put up three more runs in both the fourth (keyed by Carrillo two-run double) and fifth (keyed by a Yordanys Linares two-run double) to go up 15-0 before Hermosillo showed their only sign of life by plating six runs in the sixth as Dodgers minor leaguer Julian Leon pinch-hit a two-run homer, but it was academic by that point. Linares went 4-for-6 for Mexicali while Carrillo had three hits and four RBIs. Hector Velazquez got the win, beginning his first start for the Aguilas by tossing five shutout innings before being roughed up for five runs in the Hermosillo sixth. Maybe with a 15-run lead, he let up a little. Blackley took the loss for his third defeat in as many playoff starts for the Naranjeros this winter. A sellout crowd of 17,000 witness the onslaught in Mexicali.

In a circuit that historically has been known as a pitcher-friendly league, Thursday night's MexPac semis featured a combined 38 runs on 61 hits.

Winter Leagues roundup: Crew's Lopez flourishes in Puerto Rico

After a tough 2016 regular season that included a mid-season demotion to Double-A from Triple-A, right-hander Jorge Lopez is back on track and firing on all cylinders this offseason in Puerto Rico. The Brewers' No. 14 prospect turned in one of his finest performances for Indios de Mayaguez in his most recent start (Tuesday), tossing five scoreless frames of one-hit ball with six strikeouts and one walk against Criollos de Caguas. Even though he didn't earn a win, Lopez's fine outing would not be spoiled as Mayaguez managed to edge Caguas, 4-3, in 14 innings to notch a Game 1 victory in the circuit's best-of-seven semifinals. Lopez, 23, was equally impressive during his nine regular-season starts for Mayaguez, as he ranked first among the league's qualified hurlers in WHIP (0.87) and second in ERA (1.56). He also limited opposing hitters to just 17 hits (.145 BAA) and posted a 32-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 34 2/3 innings. Here's a look at some of the top prospects currently making waves in offseason leagues.

Australia

• Kevin Padlo, 3B, Rays -- The Rays' No. 20 prospect posted a .771 OPS thanks to a Midwest League-leading 79 walks and swatted 16 home runs last season at Class A Bowling Green. Now participating in the ABL for a second straight offseason, the 20-year-old third baseman owns a .272/.365/.519 batting line, with 15 extra-base hits and 17 RBIs, in his first 24 games for the Brisbane Bandits. He's swung the bat particularly well of late, too, going 6-for-14 with four walks in his last four contests.

• Stone Garrett, OF, Marlins -- Garrett is using this offseason to make up for the two-plus months he missed during the regular season due to a hand injury -- and he's making the most of the opportunity. The Marlins' No. 7 prospect connected on his fourth ABL homer on Friday, a three-run shot in the top of the second inning, and he's hitting .297/.339/.475 with 11 RBIs and five stolen bases through 26 games for the Sydney Blue Sox.

Dominican Republic

• Jorge Bonifacio, OF, Royals -- The Royals' No. 2 prospect had a solid 2016 campaign at Triple-A Omaha, hitting .277/.351/.461 with 19 home runs and 86 RBIs in 134 games. While he hasn't fared as well this offseason, posting a .634 OPS with one homer in 42 games, the 23-year-old outfielder did connect on a solo home run for Tigres del Licey in the first game of the circuit's round robin playoffs.

• Chesny Young, 2B/3B, Cubs -- Young, the Cubs' No. 28 prospect, has been hot of late for Leones del Escogido in postseason play, collecting four hits and three RBIs in the team's past two playoff games. After capturing the Carolina League batting title (.321 average) in 2015 and then hitting .303 last season in his Double-A debut, Young has continued to rake this winter, producing a .351 average in 22 regular-season games for Escogido.

Venezuela

• Yandy Diaz, 3B/OF, Indians -- The Indians' No. 10 prospect was one of the top hitters during regular-season play in Venezuela, where he finished second in the circuit in hitting (.371) and on-base percentage (.451) and ranked third in OPS (.961) while appearing in 40 games for Leones del Caracas. The performance is a continuation of Diaz's impressive 2016 campaign, when he hit .318/.408/.446 with 35 extra-base hits and a 71-86 walk-to-strikeout rate in 121 games between the Double- and Triple-A levels.

• Tomas Telis, C, Marlins -- Telis had another solid season at the plate in 2016 as he hit .310/.362/.429 over 91 games at Triple-A New Orleans. The Marlins' No. 12 prospect continued to hit in the big leagues following a September callup (.308 average in 13 at-bats), and then produced a .325/.385/.410 slash line in 35 games for Caribes de Anzoategui. He's 1-for-7 with an RBI in three postseason games.

Cardinals pecked at sharks and tie series

In the second game of the semifinals, the Lara Cardinals tied the series at a game apiece, the sharks managed to take the lead, but the birds would come back and win the game 9-5.

Dueling pitchers for both teams, but it was not until the bottom of the fourth inning that Tiburones de La Guaira mounted a threat and went up on the scoreboard 2-0, at the top of the sixth increased their advantage with another run to take command 3-0.

A Lara response began in the bottom of the sixth inning where an aggressive ambush led by Carlos Rivero , managed to score a bunch of runs, 5 totally, to take command of the score board 5-2.

For the lower part of the seventh, the Cardenals again exploited La Guaira and scored 4 runs this time increasing the lead by 9-3. The sharks tried to react in the upper part of the ninth scoring two but the Lara defense tightened for the win.

Lara tied the series and goes to Caracas with the mission of trying to win one game and bring the series back to Barquisimeto. The game was won for Raul Rivero The defeat went to Jonathan Albaladejo.

GUILLERMO AVILES

LVI SNB SEMIFINAL
There will be seventh game!

Matanzas.-

Guillermo Aviles' homer oxygenated Granma, winning 9-6 over Matanzas in the semifinal of the National Baseball Series LVI.

This generated a seventh game to define the opponent against defending champion Ciego de Ávila for the Cuban title of the 2015-2016 season.

Few gave Granma (50-40) a chance against a dominant force in Matanzas (70-20) especially on the road in the park Victoria of Girón against Jonder Martínez one of the best starters in the league. Granma finished 20 games behind Matanzas during the first phase of the championship season. Martinez entered the box with an excellent record of 12 victories and 3 defeats in the qualifying stage, while in the postseason he relieved, but had no decision.

This Saturday, everything went wrong for Martinez, He gave up seven unearned runs in four and a third innings. Granma scored three unearned runs in the fourth and an additional four unearned runs in the fifth on their way to an 8-1 lead.

"Mistakes triggered the win for Granma," said manager Victor Mesa at the press conference.

Matanzas came up with four runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to cut the Granma lead to 8-5, but Granma responded by extending the lead to 9-6 with a run in the top of the ninth inning. Miguel Lahera was placed in charge of quelling the Matanzas rebellion pitching two and one third innings with one run, two hits, one walk and three strikeouts

Best hitter for Granma was Guillermo Aviles (3-5), two homers, and five runs batted in. Dennis Laza and Frank Morejon each had a pair of hits. Leading hitters for Matanzas were Victor Rios Mesa (3-4), one double, two runs scored, and Yordanis Salmon and Anibal Medina with a pair of hits. Yasiel Santoya (1-2), a double, a run scored, and one batted in.

Starter Noelvis Entenza was the winner (9-3), 6 and one third innings, 8 hits, 5 runs, 3 earned, 5 strikeouts, and three walks. Jonder Martinez was the tough luck loser (12-4), four and one third innings, 5 hits, 7 runs all unearned runs, 3 strike outs, and 5 walks.

Caguas Whitewashes Santurce 1-0 in first game of baseball final

Caguas pitching bleached Mayaguez in the final game of the semi-final series tonight repeated the dose to double defending champion Santurce at the start of the Winter Ball Final Series.

Five Caguas relief pitchers combined to shutout the Cangrejeros 1-0 in the first challenge of the finals at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium.

The series, will go to a maximum of nine games, will continue tomorrow, Sunday, at the Estadio Yldefonso Solá Morales, home of the Criollos, starting at 4:15 pm

In the offense, the experienced Randy Ruiz was responsible for scoring the only run forf the visitors in the first inning.

With last night's job, Caguas pitchers have barely allowed two runs in the last 39 innings of this postseason. Caguas only allowed four hits to the Cangrejeros, who took only a single runner to third base all night. It was phenomenal work of the arms of the Creoles.

The righty Orlando Román opened for the Criollos and pinned the Cangrejeros offensive for 4.2 innings to only allow three hits. Roman allowed the first hit in the third and, in the fourth, left the mound with two outs and runners on third and second base.

With left-hander Reymond Fuentes in the batter's box, Criollos manager Luis Matos did not think twice about relieving Roman with left-hander Justin Wright. The move was rewarded when Wright eliminated Fuentes on a shot to right to end the threat.

The imported Will Oliver completed two innings without allowing a hit before Miguel Mejia took the mound in the eighth to throw a big zero against the threat of the Crabbers. Santurce placed runners on third and first base with one out against Mejia. José Lozada then fired a weak shot to short and David Vidal put away Ishmael Salgado at home. Then Ivan De Jesus', son, Ivan, hit a ball to the wall into thebhands of the left fielder, Rusney Castillo, to give great relief to the fans and the 'dugout' of the Creoles.

Ricardo Gómez closed the ninth to sign up for the rescue. Oliver won the game.

Caguas scored their only run in the top of the very first inning before the pitches of right Adalberto Flores. Jorge Padilla opened the game with a double and advanced to third on an error by shortstop Jose Lozada. With two out, the veteran Randy Ruiz's infield single batted in Ruiz.

That was the only run allowed by the starter Flores on the night. He completed five innings and allowed an undeserved run.

The relief of Santurce did their job in shutting out Caguas in the last four innings. Santurce's pitching has also looked immense by allowing only two runs in the last 39 innings.

Culiacan posts first semi win, rainout in Hermosillo

Number nine batter Jose Guadalupe Chavez (pictured) had a three-run homer and an RBI double to help power the Culiacan Tomateros to a 7-3 win over Los Mochis Saturday for a Game Three win in their Mexican Pacific League semifinal series. The Caneros lead the set, 2 games to 1.

Meanwhile, Saturday's Game Three between Mexicali and Hermosillo at Estadio Sonora was rained out and rescheduled for Sunday, as is Game Four of the Tomateros-Caneros series in Culiacan.

CULIACAN 7-9-1, Los Mochis 3-6-1

Chavez' home run was the high point of a Tomateros four-run seventh inning that broke a 3-3 tie and sent the home team to their first win of their semifinal soiree against Mochis. The Guaymas native, a former Indians prospect who turned 32 on January 2, hit .241 with just 9 RBIs in 37 games for Culiacan during the regular season, making him an unlikely offensive hero in a lineup featuring more notable batters like Ronnier Mustelier, Jose Manuel "Manny" Rodriguez, Ramiro Pena and Joey Meneses.

The Tomateros manufactured a run in a hit-free bottom of the first when leadoff hitter Maxwell Leon got on base after Mochis first sacker Saul Soto misplayed his grounder, beat a fielder's choice relay to second on Ryan Lollis' ground to Caneros third baseman Juan Carlos Gamboa, took third on a Pena sacrifice bunt and came in to score on Meneses' sacrifice fly to center. Culiacan took a 3-0 lead in the second when Chavez doubled in Ali Solis and Leon singled in Chavez from second. The score stood until Los Mochis pushed three tallies across in the top of the fifth to tie the contest as Soto, Sebastian Valle and Gamboa each had run-scoring singles in a tough inning for Tomateros starter Hector Daniel Rodriguez. The Tomateros put the final three runs of the night on the board in the seventh when veteran Oscar Robles plated Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly, followed by Chavez' three-run bomb off reliever Isaac Rodriguez (a Phoenix-born rookie not to be confused with the Mochis second baseman of the same name, who hails from Hermosillo).

Hector Daniel Rodriguez took the pitching win to go to 3-0 for Culiacan in the playoffs after turning in a rather pedestrian 4-6 record with a 3.50 ERA during the regular season. The hometown product went seven innings, allowing those three fifth-inning runs and six hits overall, striking out three and issuing no walks. Roy Merritt was tagged with the loss for the Caneros after pitching 5.1 frames until being pulled by Mochis manager Luis Sojo. Merritt was charged with five earned runs on seven hits and a walk, striking out one. The Houston native, who spent five years in the Mets system, was 6-6 for the Caneros prior to the postseason. Chavez, Mustelier and Manny Rodriguez each had two hits for Culiacan as 16,530 looked on at Estadio de los Tomateros, the site of next month's Caribbean Series. Nobody for Los Mochis had more than one hit.
