Caguas walks off against Mayagüez

A base on balls with full bases brought home the winning run in the twelfth entrance for the Creoles that tied the semi-final series

Rey Navarro worked a walk with the bases full in the twelfth entry to bring home the run that gave today the victory to the Criollos of Caguas 2-1 over the Indians of Mayagüez to tie the series at two games each.

It was the second victory in a row for the Creoles in the series.

With the game tied at one run and veteran reliever Ivan Maldonado on the mound, Jan Vazquez fired a single after one out in the twelve.

Jonathan Morales advanced to third on a hit and run single by Jack Lopez.

Jorge Padilla received an intentional walk to fill the bases.

Navarro walked on a 3-2 count to leave the Indians on the field.

It was the second game in this series that went to extra innings.

It was an excellent duel between veteran Orlando Román and left-handed Andrew Barbosa on a perfect afternoon to play baseball in the Turabo Valley.

Roman allowed no hits or runs throughout the six innings he worked. He made 66 pitches and struck out two before being replaced by reliever Jake Newberry.

Román retired the first six batters until veteran Carlos Corporán worked a free ticket opening the third inning.

After that he retired 12 batters in succession before being replaced by Newberry in the seventh inning when the game was 1-0 in favor of the Creoles.

However, Newberry could not keep the game without hits when he allowed Wellington Dotel to double. After two out, Henry Ramos singled to right to tie the game at one.

The spiky left-handed Barbosa was a worthy rival of Roman. He worked for five innings and a third in which he gave up five hits. Two of them to Jorge Padilla. He struck out four batters and walked one.

Caguas managed to score their first run in the bottom of the sixth when Padilla opened with a single. Omar García sacrificed. A shot by Rusney Castillo took him to third from where he scored on Randy Ruiz's hit.

VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE (LVBP)

Jesus Aguilar (Bravos de Margarita, 1B) - 4-8, 1 RBI, 1 K - Despite grounding into two double plays and committing his second error of the postseason, Aguilar had a stellar night on Saturday as he helped the Bravos take a 3 games to 2 lead on the Cardenales de Lara in their best-of-seven first round series with a marathon 16-inning 2-1 win. This four-hit effort increases his postseason batting average to .421 (8-for-19).

PUERTO RICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LBPRC)

Gian Paul Gonzalez (Gigantes de Carolina, backup C) - Gonzalez's second appearance of the postseason for the Gigantes, who now trail the Cangrejeros de Santurce 2 games to 1, did not see him make a plate appearance.

DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LIDOM)

Ronny Rodriguez (Aguilas Cibaenas, 1B) - 2-4, 3 R, 1 SB - Ronny-Rod continues to dominate in the LIDOM postseason, batting .381 (16-for-42) in 10 games. He will likely be continuing to play winter ball for a while as the Aguilas have a sizable lead on the rest of the league in the Round Robin phase of the playoffs.

Erik Gonzalez (Leones del Escogido, SS) - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 E - Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to five games as he seems to be past his rough start to the postseason that saw him post a pair of hitless stat lines. There aren't many Indians still playing in the Caribbean, but the ones who are still going are playing some of their best baseball of the offseason in their leagues' biggest games. This speaks well of their ability to play under pressure (Keep in mind that, for many players from the Caribbean, winning a winter league, especially in their home nation and/or combined with a Caribbean Series title, means more to them than winning an American minor league championship).

Mexicali advances, LMP semi field determined

BASEBALL MEXICO

The Mexicali Aguilas were stretched to ten innings before finally winning in Navojoa, 6-4, Sunday night to win their Mexican Pacific League playoff series, 4 games to 2, and join Los Mochis in the LMP semifinals. In Sunday's other first round game, Hermosillo snuck past Culiacan, 5-4, at Estadio de los Tomateros. That series is tied at three games apiece, meaning both teams will advance to the Final Four regardless of Monday night's Game Seven outcome because the series loser will have three wins, more than Navojoa's two victories and Mazatlan's one to qualify for the fourth "Lucky Loser" berth coming out of the opening round's three series.
Image
Mexicali 6-13-2, NAVOJOA 4-9-2

Jon Del Campo (pictured) broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the tenth inning by scoring on Emmanuel Avila's bases-loaded groundout as the Mexicali Aguilas went on to beat Navojoa, 6-4, Sunday to win their opening round series in six games. A crowd of 10,976 nearly filled Navojoa's Estadio Manuel "Ciclon" Echeverria.

The Mayos scored in the bottom of the first inning when Alan Sanchez singled in Yosmany Guerra from second base with the game's first run. The hosts then made it a 3-0 lead in the third on back-to-back RBI singles from Sanchez and Jesus Castillo off Mayos starter Kameron Loe. Mexicali came back to knot the game up with three fourth-inning runs, starting with C.J. Retherford's leadoff homer off Mayos starter Troy Marks, who went on to give up one more run on a Del Campo single and load the bases before issuing a two-out walk to Yordanys Linares that pushed Del Campo across with the tying run. The Aguilas took the lead in the fifth on Xorge Carrillo's run-scoring single, but Navojoa fought back with a tally in the bottom of the frame when Quincy Latimore singled in Guerra with the latter's third run of the game.

Both teams swapped zeros from the sixth through the ninth frames to send to contest into overtime, when Mayos reliever Esteban Haro loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the tenth. Pinch-hitter Avila then sent a grounder to Navojoa first sacker Castillo, who tagged first for the out and then threw home to force Del Campo at the plate, but catcher Omar Renteria failed to make the catch and Mexicali took the lead. Mayos manager Matias Carrillo finaly gave Haro the hook, but the damage proved irreversable. Jesus Garcia intentionally walked Yuniesky Betancourt to fill the bases for Retherford, whose sacrifice fly to left plated Ramon Rios to give the Aguilas a 6-4 advantage. It was then left to Mexicali closer Jake Sanchez to finish the job for the series-clinching win (and his third playoff save) by pitching a scoreless tenth.

Jose Manuel Lopez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the Aguilas to earn the win while Haro, who'd also tossed a scoreless ninth, took the loss. Del Campo finished with a perfect 4-for-4 night for Mexicali batting from the eighth slot in the order while Retherford went 2-for-5 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored. Latimore had three singles for the Mayos, who'd been the top seed when the playoffs opened.
Image
Hermosillo 5-9-3, CULIACAN 4-4-1

Carlos Gastelum scored the go-ahead run on O'Koyea Dickson's seventh-inning sacrifice fly and Hermosillo went on to record a 5-4 win before 15,643 onlookers in Culiacan Sunday night. The first-round series is tied after six games, meaning both teams will advance to the MexPac semifinals no matter what happens in Monday's Game Seven at Estadio de los Tomateros. Whoever falls short in tonight's game will still have won three games in the series, qualifying for the fourth semi seed as the first round's "lucky loser" team.

The game was a scoreless tie going into the bottom of the fourth inning, when Culiacan pushed four runs across against Hermosillo starter Barry Enright. With two out, Issmael Salas stroked a two-run single off Enright followed by a two-run homer by Jose Manuel Orozco. The Naranjeros fought back with three runs in the top of the fifth, keyed by Gastelum's two-run, bases-loaded single and a Dickson sac fly that brought in Jason Bourgeois from third. The Tomateros were clinging to their 4-3 lead going into the top of the seventh, when reliever David Goforth gave up a leadoff single to Jorge Flores and induced a Bourgeois pop out to second before walking Gastelum. Efren Navarro's grounder to short was misplayed by Ramiro Pena, allowing Flores to score the tying run from second while Gastelum went from first to third. Dickson then lofted his second run-scoring sac fly of the night to center, as Gastelum beat Maxwell Leon's thrown to the plate to give the Naranjeros their first lead of the game. It was then left to Enright and two relievers to hold the Tomateros scoreless over their final three frames to seal the win.

Enright finished with seven innings to earn his second victory of the series, allowing just four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. None of the four runs he allowed were earned, due to a fourth-inning fielding error by Flores at shortstop on Jose Manuel Rodriguez leadoff grounder, which should've been the first out (instead, four runs scored with two outs registered). Nationals farmhand Rafael Martin, who was a midseason All-Star last summer with AAA Syracuse, earned his second postseason save. Goforth was saddled with both the blown save and the loss for Culiacan.

Villa Clara wins 5-3 and ties the semifinall series with Defending Champion 2015 & 2016 Ciego de Ávila

With a masterful relief appearance of Alberto Bisset, Villa Clara triumphed Sunday five runs to three against Ciego de Ávila and tied the semifinals series at 2 wins each.

The experienced reinforcement righty from Santiago de Cuba, entered the beginning of the fifth and stifled a Ciego rebellion that threatened to overturn the score.

The Tigers had the bases full and were losing 5-3 when Bisset came up to the hill and forced receiver Osvaldo Vázquez to bat into a double play.

From that moment he hung four innings worth of zeroes, with a single and a walk as the only men on base granted to the batch of defending champions of 2012, 2015 and 2016.

Villa Clara started the scoring in the third inning against the opener Erlis Casanova. Yurién Vizcaíno scored the first run of the game after he singled, a sacrifice, and then the error by the shortstop Yorbis Borroto on a liner by Michael González .

Villa Clara scored again in the decisive four run fourth inning.

In that inning, they totaled five singles, four stolen bases, and pair of wild pitches which called for the expulsion of Casanova. Hernandez.

The champions narrowed the score in the beginning of the fifth and spoiled another opportunity for the righty, Yosvany Torres, reinforcement from Pinar del Rio, to record a playoff victory.

After one out, Yorbis Borroto doubled and shortstop Alexander Ayala singled. Alexander Jimenez received a walk that filled the bases, and then the Tigers chained base hits by Dainier Gálvez, Julio Pablo Martinez and Edilse Silva.

Then came Bisset, MVP of the game, and closed the door.

With a disadvantage of two runs the Avilanian manager appealed to the services of the right-hander Raidel Martínez (also from Pinar del Rio), who threw four innings, with only two hits and four strikeouts, but the damage was already done.

For Villa Clara, the offense was led by the young catcher Javier Fusté, 2-2, with a run scored and one batted in as well as the stellar veteran Frederick Cepeda, (2-4) and a run scored.

Bisset stated that his plan consisted of throwing strikes and he did. He also remembered when, in the previous campaign, he wore the jacket of his rivals today.

The third party of the other semifinal was stopped after five and a half innings, because of the rain, when the Alazanes of Granma beat 11-3 to the leaders and recordistas of the regular season, Crocodiles of Matanzas.

Tigers take advantage and are one step away from the finals

Abdel Civil's homer made a difference. Yoelvis Fiss homered with congested bases in postseason is King with five.

Havana.-

A two run homer by Civil Abdel in the second inning gave Ciego the early lead and then announced the victory 8-1 over Villa Clara to take a 3-2 lead in the semi final series.

Yoelvis Fiss, who pinch hit for Civil, took advantage of his turn at bat and homered with the bases full for the last four runs of the game. Fiss is the absolute leader in grand slam homers in a postseason with five.

That was the second homer with the congested bases of the current phase. The other was connected by Granma's Alfredo Despaigne against Matanzas.

In a challenge of mixed emotions, Los Tigres of Ciego de Avila brought out the bats for their third win in a row during this series 8x1 against Villa Clara and stood just a victory away from the finals of the National Series Baseball LVI.

To record his second win of the postseason, Canyon de la Trocha worked seven full innings in which he only allowed three hits, struck out five, with six walks, but did not tolerate any runs.

A worthy rival for Villa Clara, right-hander Freddy Asiel Álvarez allowed nine hits, two of them in the second inning when, after Osvaldo Vázquez's double, the inspired Abdel Civil homered to left for the 2-0 lead.

In a decision that reflects the importance of the game, Roger Machado brought the starter Vladimir Banos to work in the eighth, when Villa Clara closed the lead one on an rbi single by Alexander Malleta, but then the threat did not pass. The relief pitcher, Jose Angel Garcia, got the third out.

Both teams will face each other this coming Wednesday.

Granma enjoys the advantage 2-1 in the semi final series with an 11-3 win over the crocodiles.

Havana.-

Matanzas Crocadiles ran into muddy iwaters making their first appearance in foreign territory in the baseball semifinals and their hosts took the opportunity for an 11-3 win and a 2-1 advantage in the series.

The debacle began against starter Yoanni Yera, who allowed 13 hits, four doubles, a triple and a pair of home runs.

These homers came off the bats of Carlos Benítez, a three-run drive, and Frank Camilo Morejón, a two run homer.

In a game which clean up hitter, Alfredo Despaigne, was walked three times, one of them intentional, and Yoelkis Céspedes, also hitless, the remaining seven batters had value turns at bat.

The game which began on Saturday when it was postponed by rain for today, made it possible to shine from the mound as right-hander Noelvis Entenza pitched six innings, scattered seven hits, and gave up all of the crocodile runs.

William Saavedra led the offensive with 4 hits, one was a two run homer.

Naranjeros takes the series in Culiacán

Hermosillo tops Culiacan 6-3 in Game 7, both to MexPac semis

Jason Bourgeois and Fernando Perez combined for six hits, three runs and three RBIs from the top two slots in the Hermosillo batting order to pace the Naranjeros' 6-3 win at Culiacan Monday night. The victory gives the Orangemen a Game Seven win in the Mexican Pacific League first round series, but both clubs will advance to the LMP semifinals because Culiacan's three first-round wins topped Navojoa's two and Mazatlan's one to qualify the Tomateros for the fourth, or "lucky loser," Final Four berth.

Hermosillo 6-12-0, CULIACAN 3-6-0

An MLB outfielder for six teams from 2008 to 2015, Bourgeois (pictured) started the game off in the top of the first inning with a single off Culiacan starter Tony Cordova, then advanced to second on Efren Navarro's walk. Both were then driven in when O'Koyea Dickson lashed a double past centerfielder Sebastian Elizalde to put the visitors up early. Perez gave Hermosillo a 3-0 lead in the top of the second by singling in Sergio Burruel from second. The Tomateros got on the scoreboard when Iker Franco came in on Jose Manuel Orozco's groundout to short in the bottom of the third. The two teams then swapped goose eggs until the top of the seventh, when Perez followed a Bourgeois double with a two-run homer to left center field off reliever Gerardo Sanchez to make it a 6-1 Hermosillo lead. Culiacan cobbled together a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh as Jose Manuel Rodriguez scored on a groundout and Joey Meneses added a run on a sacrifice fly, but that was the last time either team would cross home plate.

Bourgeois and Perez led Hermosillo's 12-hit attack while no Culiacan player had more than one safety in the Tomateros' 6-hit night, although Alfredo Amezaga and Elizalde both doubled. Juan Pablo Oramas came back from a shaky first start to put in four strong innings for the Naranjeros, giving up one run on two hits. It was Wilmer Rios who got the win in relief, however, while Hector Galvan picked up his first postseason save. Cordova took the loss for the Tomateros, playing in front of a playoff-high 18,938 fans at home, by allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. The home side only won twice over seven games in this series, with Hermosillo taking three of four games in Culiacan.

The semifinals will open Wednesday night when Hermosillo visits Mexicali and Los Mochis welcomes Culiacan.

LIGA DE BEISBOL DOMINICANO

Erik Gonzalez (SS, Leones del Escogido) 1-4, SO. Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to six games by collecting another postseason hit. Gonzalez got off to a rough start to the postseason, but has seemed to right the ship. Gonzalez is hitting just .244 this postseason in the Dominican, but batted .273 during the regular season. It has been a very successful past season for Gonzalez, and he will take that positive momentum with him when he heads to spring training.

LIGA VENEZUELA BEISBOL PROFESIONAL

Jesus Aguilar (1B, Bravos de Margarita) 1-4. Aguilar stayed hot at the dish as his postseason average now sits at a blistering .370. Of all the Indians farmhands to play winter ball this offseason, Aguilar has arguably had the best performance of anyone. Aguilar has hit for power with 10 bombs in 140 at-bats during the Venezuelan regular season, and has had more clutch power hits during the playoffs. Even more impressive for Aguilar has been his high average and on-base percentage. If Aguilar can continue to hit for average and get on base then he could position himself to make some noise this summer.
