RONNY RODRIGUEZ

1/3/17

Dominican Winter League

Ronny Rodriguez (1B, Aguilas Cibaenas): 3-5, 1 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K. Rodriguez is swinging a red hot stick to start the winter ball playoffs as he is now batting .462 following a 3-for-5 performance on Tuesday in a 7-5 win by Aguilas. The Dominican infielder is coming off a regular season winter league campaign where he batted .306 with three homers and 12 RBI's to help lead Aguilas to the Caribbean tournament.

Erik Gonzalez (SS, Leones del Escogido): 1-4, 1 R. Unlike his minor league teammate Ronny Rodriguez, Gonzalez is only batting .190 to start the playoffs. On Tuesday, the 25-year-old shortstop went 1-for-4 while scoring one of Escogido's two runs on a walk-off homer by DH Ronny Paulino to break a scoreless tie in the ninth.

Venezuelan Winter League

Jesus Aguilar (1B, Bravos de Margarita): 0-3, 1 K. Since joining Bravos de Margarita for the postseason, Aguilar is batting .333 despite an 0-for-3 performance on Tuesday in their loss to Cardenales. In 42 games for Caracas, the 26-year-old batted .314 with 10 homers in 22 RBI's. This upcoming spring training and season should be interesting concerning his future with the Indians considering the addition of Edwin Encarnacion. After a 30-home-run season for Columbus last year, he might be able to find a better opportunity elsewhere.

Puerto Rican League

Joseph Colon (RP, Cangrejeros de Santurce): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 0 K. After a second half of the season that included shoulder soreness and inconsistency, Colon is back on the mound in winter ball pitching in his native Puerto Rico. So far in two appearances, the right-hander has yet to allow a run or a hit while walking one and striking out one. The 26-year-old earned the call to Cleveland after posting an 0.59 ERA in 13 appearances for Columbus. Overall, Colon went 0-1 with an 0.82 ERA in 20 minor league outings last season.

Despaigne and granma overwhelm Matanzas

Matanzas broke the league record in games won with 70 out of 90 games played but Granma won the all-important first game of the semifinal series between the two teams.

For Granma, the victory is even more relevant, as they beat the home team, Matanzas. Few have disputed the fact that Matanzas is the overwhelming favorites to win this tournament. Precisely, Granma had a visiting team record of 21 wins against 24 losses while the home team had 40 wins against 8 losses during the regular season.

Leading by a score of 2-0 and the bases loaded, Alfredo Despaigne dispatched a grand slam homer far over the center field fence. The home run gave Granma a 6-0 lead which the high powered Matanzas offense would not overcome.

DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE

Erik Gonzalez (Leones del Escogido, SS): 2-5, R, 2B, 2 RBI, K – In six postseason games, Gonzalez has now compiled a .231 average in 26 at-bats and has driven in three. He has scored five runs, walked just once and struck out six times. His playoff performance is slightly below his regular season output, where he hit .273 with 12 RBI in 21 games.

Ronny Rodriguez (Aguilas Cibaenas, 1B): 0-4, 4 K, E, SAC – Rodriguez had about as ugly a night as possible on Wednesday. Beyond striking out in each of his four at-bats, he also committed a throwing error. He has still been red hot in the Dominican Winter League postseason, batting .400 (12-for-30) with four runs, four doubles and four RBI over seven games.

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE

Gian Paul Gonzalez (Gigantes de Carolina, C): 0-3, 3 K – Similar to Rodriguez over in the Dominican Republic, Gonzalez didn’t have the best showing on Wednesday. In Puerto Rico, Gonzalez also struck out in all of his at-bats and is still hitless this offseason.

Defending Champions Take Game 1

Vladimir Garcia, Raidel Martinez and Jose Angel García guaranteed the smile from the mound

Havana.-

Ciego de Avila, champion in the previous two seasons, defeated on Wednesday 10 - 4 Villa Clara in the first game of the semifinal best of seven series .

The Tigers unleashed an attack of 13 hits, but their best ally was the lack of control of the Villa Clara pitchers, who gave away nine walks, two of them intentional.

Villa Clara opened the scoring in the opening inning combining singles from Andy Zamora, Alexander Ayala, Alexander Malleta and Frederich Cepeda, who produced a pair of runs against Avilian starter Vladimir Garcia.

Freddy Asiel Álvarez started the first innings with zeros on the board without any complications, but in the third inning after two outs, he gave up a walk and allowed two hits that combined with two errors by the defense provided the champions with a turn around (3-2).

Then the Tigers scored in all the innings, minus the eighth, to increase the score until the final 10-4.

Freddy Asiel finished his job after five innings, with a 5-3 lead.

Vladimir Garcia completed six innings in which he threw 105 pitches and conceded six hits, including a solo homer by Michael Gonzalez, who narrowed the score 4-3 early in the fifth inning.

Raidel Martínez, one of the most promising rookies, threw a seventh and eighth giving up one run, while Jose Angel Garcia, the league's best relief pitchers, stretched his arm out in the ninth.

Formidable challenges in store for Yang Dai-kang

The China Post news staff
January 6, 2017, 12:04 am TWN

The name Yang Dai-kang (陽岱鋼) may be unfamiliar to non-Taiwanese baseball fans as the island nation that sees the sport as its national pastime is more renowned for producing world-class pitchers such as Chien-Ming Wang (王建民) and Wei-Yin Chen (陳偉殷) than batters.

But the 29-year-old outfielder, who was just signed by traditional Japanese professional baseball powerhouse The Yomiuri Giants in a historic contract last month, is a name that deserves the world's attention.

In a press conference held at Tokyo on Dec. 19, the oldest and most successful team in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball Organization announced that it had signed the free agent outfielder on a massive five-year contract.

The baseball club that has won the Japan Series 22 times, most recently in 2012, did not disclose the details of Yang's contract, citing confidential reasons.

But according to Taiwanese media, Yang's contract is worth 2.2 billion yen or NT$680 million, putting him alongside former Japanese legends Katsumi Hirosawa (廣澤克己) and Kazuhiro Kiyohara (清原和博) in securing the longest contract ever by a free agent in Japan.

[ 29 years old!! 5 years @ $19MIL/YR for a ball player that has yet to bat over .300, in 9 years he hit 18 homers in 2013, 25 in 2014 and 14 in 2016. He does have 3 Gold Gloves to his credit though! INSANE! And I thought contracts in the USA were unreasonable and down right foolish !]

Santa Clara Remains Unbeaten

Bladimir Banos Bested Yosvany Torres and Ciego de Ávila maintained superiority over Villa Clara.

Havana.-

The defending champions Ciego de Avila defeated 9-6 Villa Clara to remain unbeaten in the semifinal best of 7 series.

In a duel between Bladimir Baños and Yosvany Torres, Baños was superior and Ciego de Avila took another step on their way to the title of national champion which they've held the past two seasons.

Although the hosts had more hits 14 by 11, the tigers of Roger Machado's team were more effective with the wood and already by the bottom of the fifth accumulated the nine runs that gave Ciego their second triumph in as many games.

Six innings were completed by Baños in which he served up five hits, struck out three and gave up a run, without giving up any walks.

Torres could not complete the third inning, in which he gave up five runs on seven hits.

The Tigers continued their offensive effort against Alberto Bicet, the first reliever who gave up three hits and four runs in two-third innings.

Crocodiles Equal Subseries In Their Swamp

Jonder Martínez and Yurisbel Gracial excelled in Matanzas victory

Matanzas.-

In the tightest game of the postseason Matanzas tied Granma with a win each in the series thanks to a double in the sixth inning by Yurisbel Gracial a hero, after being a villain.

The shortstop and sixth batter in the lineup for the crocodiles found on base Yordanis Samon when the righty Yoalkis Cruz put the ball over the plate and Gracial doubled him home that gave the victory 2-1 to the home squad.

"The ball came in the zone and I took advantage of the opportunity. I made an error that cost the team a run - made me feel bad , "he said..

Matanzas was the first to score in the second - Gracial singled to open the inning, Yasiel Santoya walked and Ariel Martínez sacrificed the runners to second and third. Gracial scored on a fielder's choices.

The only scoring for Granma came in the sixth. Roel Santos's double and consecutive sacrifices one by Yordan Manduley advancing Santos to third and the other by Dennis Laza on a sacrifice fly to center.

Jonder Martinez worked five innings and two-thirds in which he tolerated a pair of hits and one run, had five strikeouts and four walks.

He had a great adversary in Cruz, very effective in seven innings, although he gave up both Matanzas runs.

Also up for the task was closer Frank Luis Medina, who in three innings only gave up a hit, struck out two and gave a walk
