Super Reinforcements For The Title

Each manager was asked for what he needed most for the playoffs. Some prioritizing batting, others pitching, especially relief pitching. In the end, four teams emerged with the hope of winning the semi-finals and heading towards the 56th season title of Cuban base ball.

Victor Mesa (Matanzas) was the only one of the four managers who did not claim position players. He does not need hitters whose team ended up leading virtually all offensive categories, from average (.330), to walks received (410). That's why he selected Liván Moinelo, the best lefty reliever in Cuban base ball, to be handed over to the left-handed hitters, and Frank Luis Medina and Danny Betancourt relief pitchers among the leaders in that category.

Manager of Villa Clara, Vladimir Hernández's first two options were the Camaguey shortstop Alexander Ayala and the Spiritist Frederich Cepeda, who can form a great one-two punch in the batting lineup.. His third reinforcement was the veteran Santiago Alberto Bisset.

Since before, everyone knew that Granma was in search of a top line shortstop. Manager Carlos Martí confirmed it when he called upon Holguin's Yordan Manduley. Not content with that he summoned another shortdtop from the Cubs, Yunior Paumier. The other reinforcement will be the right-hander Noelvis Entenza, who would be part of an excellent rotation of starters siding with Lázaro Blanco and Yoalkis Cruz.

Finally, it was no secret that the Avilanian Tigers needed an outfielder. Quickly the manager Roger Machado asked for the southpaw from Guantanamo Julio Pablo Martinez. He then selected right-hander Erly Casanova and left for the end a surprise! From de la Isla de la Juventud, the rookie Reinier Gálvez, for many, a player who should have been called upon by any team to play the second phase.

Now it only remains to wait for the advent of the next 2017 postseason to start on Wednesday, January 4 in the Girón Victoria and Jose Ramon Cepero. The possible starters are Yoanni Yera (Matanzas), Lázaro Blanco (Granma), Vladimir García (Ciego de Ávila) and Freddy Asiel Álvarez (Villa Clara).

56 SN: HERE ARE THE LEADERS
OF THE CUBAN SEASON

Image
With Matanzas' winning record 70 games for a 90-game campaign and the best offensive team in the league, the team's own players were at the top of the leader board for the qualifying phase of Cuba's 56 National Baseball Series.

Let's take a look at the top leaders of the Cuban championship.
Image
Jefferson Delgado capped off an exceptional campaign with his first batting title in Cuba's serie nationale. Delgado made it to .403 (283-114) on average and did not have much rivalry for the title in dispute. His award comes after his third consecutive season that the batting champion has hit better than .400 mark - including the .500 of Yulieski Gurriel last year - and the 22nd time that it has been accomplished in Cuban ball history. the Veguero Omar Linares did it for the first time in the season 1984-85 with .409 of average.

Of others on the leadership board, one man, possibly the MVP of the qualifying phase, the Granma reinforcement who plays for Matanzas, Yordanis Samon (left in the picture header) , took four of the top offensive awards this tournament season, leading in runs scored ( 65), hits (126), doubles (27) and rbi's (76). Samon also led in bat appearances (385), total bases (185), intentional walks (27), and OPS (1,035),

The leader in triples went to the 19-year-old from Granma, the player Yoelkis Céspedes, while Osvaldo Vázquez of Avila led in home runs with 17 and slugging with .596.
Image
The young Victor V Mesa remembered his father's time and managed to steal 40 bases as undisputed leader of the season. The 40 steals by Mesa are the largest amount for a player on the island in 15 seasons, since 2000-01 when Havana's Enrique Diaz stole 44. Mesa also led in runner's caught stealing with 10, in a tie with Camagüeyan Humberto Bravo .

Dennis Laza finished first being hit by pitch with 19 while Michael Gonzalez received 69 walks and Villarreal's Yurién Viscaíno struck out 56 times.

As for the pitching also for the first time the right - hander from Granma Lazaro Blanco (pictured right head) was crowned champion of pitching with his 1.63 (143.1-26) of ERA, Blanco finished his stellar campaign leaderships Victories (14) and shut outs with (3).

Villarreal midfielder Freddy Asiel Alvarez was another who had a great season, one of his best, when he won 10 games during the regular season and a 10-1 (.909) record.
Image
Matanzas Alexander Rodriguez had the most relief appearances with 38, while the artemiseño / avileño Jose A. Garcia took for the sixth time the title of saves, this time with 15, extending to 215 his record of games saved life time.

Leading the league in strikeouts was the best lefty Yoanni Yera with 123.

Another stellar star like Vladimir Garcia led in complete games with his teammate Dachel Duquesne, both with 5, while Garcia was also the one that worked the most innings with 152.

In negative aspects like defeats were Dairon Riera and Yaifredo Domínguez, both with 10, while the most walks given up was the Camagüey Yariel Rodriguez with 54.

Here the batting and pitching leaders of the Cuban season 2016-17.

Winter leagues roundup: Miami's Garrett making up for lost time

There were high expectations for Stone Garrett ahead of his 2016 full-season debut with Class A Greensboro. However, the Marlins' No. 7 prospect would appear in only 35 games before a practical joke by then-teammate Josh Naylor resulted in right thumb laceration and subsequent surgery that kept the 21-year-old outfielder out of action until mid-August.

Now fully healthy, Garrett is making up for some of that lost time this offseason with a strong showing Australian Baseball League. He was the only player on the World All-Stars to collect multiple hits (2-for-4) in the circuit's annual All-Star Game last week, and then went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in his first post-All-Star contest on Thursday.

All together, Garrett is hitting .310/.352/.488 with eight extra-base hits, three home runs and four stolen bases through 22 games for the Sydney Blue Sox.

Here's a look at some of the top prospects currently making waves in offseason leagues.

Australia

• Kevin Padlo, 3B, Rays -- The Rays' No. 20 prospect posted a .771 OPS thanks to a Midwest League-leading 79 walks and finished tied for third with 16 home runs last season at Class A Bowling Green. Now playing in the ABL for a second straight offseason, the 20-year-old third baseman -- an ABL All-Star along with Garrett -- owns a .260/.356/.521 battling line, with 14 extra-base hits and 17 RBIs, in his first 22 games for the Brisbane Bandits.

Mexico

• Brian Goodwin, OF, Nationals -- After falling off the prospect radar from 2013-15, Goodwin resuscitated his career and ultimately reached the Major Leagues for the first time in '16, hitting .286 with five extra-base hits over parts of 22 games with the Nationals. The club's No. 29 prospect has continued to swing the bat well in Mexico, as he collected hits in five straight games last week to lift his overall slash line to .313/.350/.455 through 25 games for Naranjeros de Hermosillo.

Puerto Rico

• Jorge Lopez, RHP, Brewers -- Coming off of his first shaky start of the offseason, Lopez, the Brewers' No. 14 prospect, got back on track Tuesday in his latest turn for Indios de Mayaguez as he tossed four scoreless innings in a no-decision. The 23-year-old right-hander scattered three hits, walked three and fanned a season-high six in the outing. Among qualified hurlers, Lopez ranks first in WHIP (0.87) and second in ERA (1.56), and he's limited opposing hitters to 17 hits (.145 BAA) while posting a 32-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 34 2/3 innings (nine starts).

Venezuela

Yandy Diaz, 3B/OF, Indians -- The Indians' No. 10 prospect turned in another strong campaign in the high minors in 2016, hitting .318/.408/.446 with 35 extra-base hits and a 71-86 walk-to-strikeout rate in 121 games between the Double-A and Triple-A levels. The 25-year-old third baseman/outfielder has been one of the top hitters this offseason while playing for Leones del Caracas in Venezuela, where he's hit .371/.451/.510 in 40 games. Much of that has to do with his past 10 games, during which he's hit a robust .400/.488/.514, and it's also worth noting that Diaz has seen regular playing time in center field.

• Carlos Tocci, OF, Phillies -- The Venezuela native finished his week on a high note, going 5-for-9 with four RBIs between Tigres de Aragua's contests on Wednesday and Thursday. After hitting .333 in 11 games last offseason, the Phillies' No. 22 prospect has produced a .323/.403/.392 batting line, with 11 extra-base hits and 40 runs scored, in 59 games for Tigres.

• Tomas Telis, C, Marlins -- Telis had another strong season at the plate in 2016 as he hit .310/.362/.429 over 91 games at Triple-A New Orleans. The Marlins' No. 12 prospect continued to hit in the big leagues following a September callup (.308 average in 13 at-bats), and he now owns a .325/.385/.410 slash line -- thanks in part to hits in seven straight games -- in 35 games for Caribes de Anzoategui.

• Renato Nunez, 3B/1B, Athletics -- After getting his first taste of the big leagues in September, the A's No. 5 prospect is tied for second in the league with 11 home runs -- the latest of which he hit at the onset of the week. Though he's cooled off of late after a torrid start, the 22-year-old corner infielder still owns an impressive .304/.389/.542 slash line with 18 extra-base hits and 35 RBIs through 45 games for Tigres de Aragua.

RONNY RODRIGUEZ SECOND FROM LEFT

Eagles win third straight defeat Licey

Ronny Rodriguez again dressed as an offensive hero leading the Cibao Eagles to a 6-3 victory against the Tigers of the Licey in a game held Friday night at Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium in Santo Domingo in the round robin tournament dedicated to the doctor Alejandro Asmar Sánchez (Chito).

Rodriguez fired three hits, scored one time, and drove in two. Rodriguez was complemented in the offensive department by Zoilo Almonte and Hector Luna who were also factors in the attack of 12 Cibaeños hits.

This is the third win in a row for the Eagles (3-1) and are in the first position of the round robin, while Licey (2-1) falls to the second position.

It is necessary to give credit to the pitching of the Eagles led by Francisley Bueno, who was untouchable during the two innings and a third that he worked in which he only allowed a hit, gave up a walk and struck one, when rain interrupted the game and caused a delay for more than an hour and a half after three innings and a third had been played. The meeting stopped at 8:25 p.m. and resumed at 9:45.

After resuming the game, Bueno rested and gave way to Richelson Peña (1-0), winner of the game followed by Tony Peña Jr., Juan Grullón, Edgar Garcia, Samuel Deduno, Richard Rodriguez and Nefi Ogando.

For the Licey John Lannan (0-1) started who lost the match, was followed by Ivan Pineiro, Michael Dimock, Marlon Arias, Rafael Soriano and Wagner Madrigal.

The runs

The Eagles scored three against starter John Lannan at the top of the third when first baseman Ronny Rodriguez hit an RBI single that scored Alfredo Marte from second. Rodriguez then came in on a double to right field by Zoilo Almonte. Héctor Luna topped off the inning with an rbi hit for a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles added another in the sixth when Jonathan Villar opened with a hit against Michael Dimock, Alfredo Marte doubled to left scoring Villar to put the game at 4-0 in favor of the Cibaeños.

Licey scored one in the bottom of the seventh when reliever Samuel Deduno walked Marco Hernandez with the bases loaded allowing Hanley Ramirez to score and the board went to 4-1.

The Eagles reacted in the eighth with rbi base hits by Jonathan Villar and Ronny Rodriguez off of the pitches from reliefer Rafael Soriano changing the board to 6-1. Final.

The Eagles had Ronny Rodriguez as their best offensive man with three hits, with two runs batted in and one run scored, while Jonathan Villar, also had three hits, batted in one and scored two; Héctor Luna had a double and a single, with a run batted in, while Alfredo Marte and Zoilo Almonte dispatched a double each, with a run scored and another rbi; Danny Santana had a hit and scored once and Orlando Calixte, a hit.

For the Licey, the designated hitter Hanley Ramirez fired a pair of singles, with a run scored; Anderson Hernandez and Austin Wynns, a hit each.

[ Ronny Rodriguez has played RF, LF, 1B, 2B, SS, and DH for the the Aguilas team ]

The Puerto Rican and Mexican Pacific Leagues saw their regular seasons come to an end on Friday night while the Australian regular season and Dominican Round Robin rolled on.

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE (LBPRC)

Joseph Colon (Cangrejeros de Santurce, RP) - 1 IP, perfect, 1 K - Colon made his season debut on the final day of the regular season. It appears that this may be a warm-up appearance and that he was signed by the regular season champions specifically to pitch in the postseason.

DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LIDOM) POSTSEASON - ROUND ROBIN

Ronny Rodriguez (Aguilas Cibaenas, 1B) - 3-5, 1 R, 2 RBI - Ronny-Rod continues to rake in the postseason, as he is now 8-for-18 (.444) in four games. Even better, he had a flawless game in the field.

Erik Gonzalez (Leones del Escogido, SS) - 2-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 SB - The third time proved to be the charm as Gonzalez finally had a good night at the plate and stole his first base of the postseason.

Civ!

I know a lot of people think that winter ball is a joke.

After following these leagues for 10+ years now, I've noticed a pattern (not 100% accurate of course). The prospects that do well (19-22) and the players that are trying to make a major league rosters as utility players (22-26), normally find jobs and go on to have decent careers.

The Dominican Republic, in my opinion, is the best of the four leagues. If you do very well in this league, you have a good shot at making a major league roster in one capacity or another.

Ronny Rodriguez is putting up numbers at 24 that Jose Ramirez was putting up as a 21-22 year old. I don't think one can overlook the season the Rodriguez is having. These numbers are exceptional when you take a hard look at them. In fact, I can't remember a year when the Cleveland representatives have done this well playing winter ball as a group.

Diaz's Day

Cuban Yandy Diaz dreams of winning the batting title of the LVBP, but has to avoid being overtaken by Jose Tábata or Hernán Pérez

[ Well, Hernan Perez did overtake Yandy Diaz on the last day of season. Torrealba did not play his starters on that last day because the Lions were eliminated the day before. Not counting last night's game (December 28th), Diaz had an average of .371, slightly above the magallanero Jose Tábata (.363) and the Tiger Hernán Pérez (.360). Perez finished up by batting .373 to Diaz's .371. ]

Is there anything better than receiving good news at breakfast? Surely there are and many. Yandy Diaz experienced it last week. The Cuban left his room early when someone stopped him and said, "Epa, you're set to break two records with the Lions."

As usually happens with players, Diaz had no idea that he was seriously threatening the 36 consecutive games on base streak that Daniel Mayora had achieved in the 2015-2016 season. "I was not aware of that," Diaz said with satisfaction. "Mine is to help the team win and not think much about records."

Diaz not only surpassed the record, but expanded it as well. Yesterday, Diaz broke the record by 3 expanding the record to 39 consecutive games on base, that is to say, all of those who have participated with the Lions. But the mark can pass under the table if the Caribbean conquers the batting title this season. And hey, it's pretty close.

Not counting last night's game, Diaz had an average of .367, slightly above the magallanero Jose Tábata (.363) and the tiger Hernán Pérez (.360). Although watching the averages fluctuate on the day-to-day basis not what you like to see, it is comfortable to know that you are in charge of the department.

"Being a batter is a pretty good experience because there are a lot of good hitters here in Venezuela," said the player, who is considered a prospect that could help the Cleveland Indians' big team at any time. "I've always said that this league has prepared me to be a stronger hitter because there are pitchers of too much quality."

Is the league difficult? If so, Diaz disguises it very well, because his chain of games reaching base safely has made Diaz the most difficult out of the league, so it is no coincidence that his average base (OBP) is .450 in 39 games. Despite modesty, there must be a secret to being so successful against the pitchers in this league.

"Well ..." he says after thinking for a few seconds and glaring at the outfield fences. "I've seen a lot of breaking pitches here. I have prepared for those pitches and I think that has made me a better hitter. "

But beyond the ability to adapt, the 25-year-old Cuban has always been a good hitter. This year with Cleveland's Triple A subsidiary, he hit .325. With Villa Clara Oranges, he averaged .292 in 67 games in the Cuban National Series.

"I've never won a battle title," he admits, but it looks like this year may be the first time."

[ I don't think that the manager, Torrealba, knew what was at stake for Diaz. I can't imagine Torrealba holding Diaz out of that last game knowing Diaz was on step away from the batting title. In Torrealba's defense, he took over the reigns of the Lions the last two weeks of the season. A season when the Lions were eliminated on the next to last day of the season. I have a feeling Torrealba's concentration was having his team qualify and overlooked Diaz's quest for the batting title. D'ya think ? ]
